Project Highlights
- 516’ design-build cut-and-cover tunnel under the track in Turn 1 of the Speedway
- Tunnel’s width of 36’ and clear height of 17’6” was designed to accommodate large vehicles for the team, fans and emergency personnel
- 185’ entrance and exit ramps were designed with grades able to accommodate large RV’s and semi tractor trailers; also included 7’ wide pedestrian walkway through the tunnel
- Tunnel excavation followed removal of the existing track paving - 86 arched sections, weighing 27-tons each, were cast offsite and lifted into place by a 250-ton crawler crane
- Sitework improvements included regrading and re-routing a drainage ditch outside Turn 1 to accommodate tram turnaround and ticketing facilities; and relocation of underground water, sanitary and stormwater piping to accommodate the tunnel entrance ramp
- Provided tunnel lighting, security/ticket office, guard house, fencing, vehicle and pedestrian gates, pavement markings, landscaping, and track pavement replacement
- Awards: Design-Build Institute Award of Excellence 2005; Associated Builders and Contractors Award of Excellence 2005; Associated Builders and Contractors National Excellence in Construction Project of the Year 2005
