Pedestrian Bridge Over I-95
Baptist Medical Center
Jacksonville, Florida
Project Highlights
- Design-build 780 foot pedestrian bridge crossing I-95 and connecting the Wolfson Childrens Hospital and the Nemours Childrens Clinic
- Consists of nine steel truss sections, bearing on four cast-in-place and two precast piers; sections ranged form 38 to 100 feet in length and weighed from 22 to 49 tons
- Walkway consists of the main cable-stayed bridge, composed of five sections, totaling 390 feet, four pier supported sections totaling 270 feet and two 80 foot long stay-supported spans
- Bridge sections fabricated off-site and delivered in two pieces during the night when traffic flow was low; once on site, the two pieces were bolted together; and the metal floor deck and roof deck were installed
- Three inch thick, lightweight fiberglass reinforced wall and soffit panels were then bolted to the street structure to create the exterior “skin” of the overpass; once completed, entire bridge sections were placed on the concrete piers using multiple cranes
- Completion resulted in an imposing structure under which thousands of vehicles pass each day as they travel one of the nation’s busiest interstate highways
